Background: Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is an endogenous competitive inhibitor of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (NOS), which prevents synthesis of nitric oxide (NO). Low levels of NO are associated with endothelial dysfunction and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
